  • Resilience
Focus on Avoidance

Constructing a building and its surrounds (at site level) in a way that avoids risk of flood (e.g. by raising it above flood level, re-siting outside flood risk area etc.).

Focus on Resistance

Constructing a building in a way that prevents floodwater entering the building and damaging its fabric.

Focus on Resilience

Constructing a building in a way that minimises the impact of flood water (i.e. no permanent damage is caused, structural integrity is maintained and drying and cleaning are facilitated).

Weather warnings

The Government’s UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) and other research programmes have found that rising global temperatures are causing rainfall patterns to change. It is generally recognised that winters are becoming progressively wetter and warmer and summers drier. Understanding flood statistics gives us opportunities to manage, prevent and find solutions to reduce the impact of flood risk.

  • 16% Around 5.2m (one-sixth) of properties in England are at risk of flooding
  • 41% (276,000) of people eligible for free flood warnings are registered to receive them.
  • 40% of businesses do not reopen after suffering a catastrophic loss due to flooding.
  • 25% of flooding occurs outside areas formally designated as being flood prone.
